The Port of Atlanta, managed by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), has evolved significantly since its inception in 1945, becoming a pivotal hub for international trade and investment. This growth has greatly enriched Georgia’s economy, benefiting its over 9.7 million residents. The GPA is dedicated to providing highly efficient and productive port facilities, which are among the nation’s best. Key components of Georgia’s port system include deepwater ports in Savannah and Brunswick, along with inland terminals in Chatsworth, Bainbridge, and Columbus. These facilities serve as vital gateways for global trade, facilitating the flow of raw materials and finished products worldwide.

The GPA is governed by a thirteen-member Board of Directors, appointed by the governor, and managed by a CEO who is an experienced international transportation professional. The GPA is not only one of the state’s largest public employers, with nearly 1,300 logistics professionals, but it also plays a crucial role in generating significant employment across the state. The GPA’s operations, along with related private sector activities, contribute to over 440,000 jobs statewide, generating $106 billion in revenue and more than $25 billion in annual income.

The Port of Savannah, notable for having North America’s largest single-terminal container facility, consists of two modern, deepwater terminals: Garden City Terminal and Ocean Terminal. Garden City Terminal ranks as the fourth busiest container handling facility in the United States, covering over 1,200 acres and handling millions of tons of containerized cargo annually. Ocean Terminal, dedicated to breakbulk and Roll-on/Roll-off operations, spans 200.4 acres and offers over 1.4 million square feet of versatile, covered storage space.

The Port of Brunswick includes three GPA-owned deepwater terminals, two of which are directly operated by the GPA. It has earned a reputation for productivity and efficiency, particularly as one of North America’s fastest-growing ports for automobiles and heavy machinery. Over 12 major auto manufacturers use the Colonel’s Island Terminal, which also hosts a rapidly expanding bulk export/import operation for agri-products and other goods. Brunswick’s Mayor’s Point Terminal specializes in exporting Georgia’s forest products, while Marine Port Terminals, operated by Logistec U.S.A., handles breakbulk and bulk commodities.

Additionally, the Appalachian Regional Port, a collaborative effort involving the state of Georgia, Murray County, the GPA, and CSX Transportation, serves as a new inland rail terminal, providing a powerful gateway to global markets. Georgia’s inland terminal operations at Port Bainbridge and Port Columbus offer strategic advantages for the movement of bulk commodities in and out of the Southeastern United States.
